Staffing & Supervision
Independent senior oversight of an in-house finance function - the review layer a small team usually cannot staff for itself.
Overview
Most finance teams below a certain size have no one senior enough to check the person doing the work. Errors then survive until an auditor, a lender or a regulator finds them, by which point they are expensive. Supervision puts a periodic, documented review over the routine: the close is examined, the reconciliations are tested, the filings are checked before they are made rather than after.
What this covers
Independent review of the close before management accounts are issued.
Testing of bank, vendor, inter-company and statutory reconciliations.
Checking returns and statutory submissions before they are filed, not after.
Whether duties are genuinely separated in practice, not merely on the org chart.
Periodic on-site oversight of stores, stock and site-level records.
A short written report each cycle, with open items tracked to closure.
Common questions
Internal audit looks back and reports on whether controls worked. Supervision sits in the cycle itself - the review happens before the filing goes out or the accounts are issued, so errors are corrected rather than reported. Organisations often need both, and where an internal audit is also being performed the scopes should be set so they do not simply duplicate.
